In the Abbey Church of St Mauritius in Tholey, the new artist windows by Mahbuba Maqsoodi reveal the full potential of the centuries-old art of stained glass, filling the interior of the church with an intense play of light and colour. Powerful and harmonious, the expressive compositions on glass inspire visitors to the medieval monastery church.

Munich-based artist Mahbuba Elham Maqsoodi designed and painted 29 of Tholey's 32 new stained glass windows. Her unique figurative paintings are well thought out and executed to perfection. The stage-like works move between the past, present and future. They depict themes and figures from the Old and New Testaments in an expressive yet enigmatic way, leaving their mark on the viewer of the Maqsoodi windows, who is moved by the powerful and graceful colours and the richness of the design.

The large formats and characterisation of the people depicted, as well as the overall composition of the stained glass windows, testify to a deep understanding of the messages of faith. This also characterised much of her earlier international work.
